Postdocs at the DZNE

The purpose of a postdoc phase is to build and enhance the postdoc's scientific skills. As a postdoc at the DZNE, you are able to pursue your research largely independently, under the guidance of research group leaders from various research areas. You work to develop your own scientific profile and your ability to conduct research independently.

The central aspects of any postdoc phase include preparing for the next career step. The DZNE supports you with a variety of offers, including the DZNE Career Center. In addition, the DZNE offers outstanding postdocs the “Excellence in Science Program” and the internal career path of the Career Development Fellow for professional and personal development in preparation for an academic leadership position.

Excellence in Science Programm

With the 1.5-year development program, the DZNE aims to specifically prepare outstanding postdocs, who are ideally in the first three years after their PhD, for an academic career. The program covers the following topics:

  • Workshops on third-party funding, leadership in science and application for professorship
  • Exchange of experiences with DZNE PIs
  • Peer coaching and mentoring for individual career planning and development
  • Information about opportunities to gain teaching experience
  • Grant coaching for funding applications

Internal career path “Career Development Fellow”

With the career path of the Career Development Fellow, the DZNE would like to support outstanding postdocs as they move to undertake their own independent scientific careers. Fellows receive the opportunity to establish their own research line and take on budget responsibility – and thereby develop their profile and visibility in the competition for scientific leadership positions.

The Career Development Fellows are supported by mentoring and coaching offers with regard to scientific and career-related topics. The regular exchange of experiences among each other and in the network with former Fellows is also planned.

Career Development Fellow positions normally have a duration of five years. They are designed to support Fellows in the transition to a scientific leadership position.

Grant Writing Bootcamp

Once a year, the DZNE offers a “Grant Writing Bootcamp” for postdocs in cooperation with the Stiftung Deutsche Demenzhilfe. The bootcamp consists of a series of workshops in which methods from innovation management and feedback by DZNE PIs are used to refine one´s research idea. In a second workshop, participants learn how to write successful applications for third-party funding. The completed grant application can be submitted to the Stiftung Deutsche Demenzhilfe´s “Innovative Minds program” to receive start-up funding in order to generate a basis and pilot data for innovative research projects. Overall, the effort is aimed at promoting innovative ideas of DZNE postdocs and at helping DZNE postdocs develop their own scientific profiles with respect to their future academic/research careers.
