SoCA – Analysis of professional recommendations in the German health care context

Duration:2019 - 2020
Funding:DZNE Witten
Project Management:Dr. Bernhard Holle
Project Coordination:Dr. Iris Hochgraeber

The middle-range theory of stability of home-based care arrangements for people living with dementia (SoCA-Dem theory) offers different options for a future application. It provides a theoretical frame for future research; but also care providers and structures can be oriented towards the theory, especially with regard to a tailored counselling and care for people with dementia and their informal carers. Within this subproject, a professional recommendation and a guideline for specialists in nursing and medicine (the concept of the Zentrum für Qualität in der Pflege (ZQP) „Qualitätsrahmen für Beratung in der Pflege“, and the DEGAM-guideline for general practitioners „Pflegende Angehörige von Erwachsenen“) will be analysed. We ask, if the central concepts that constitute and influence stability are included. The aim is to examine the present structures/recommendations against the background of the theory of stability of home-based care arrangements and to analyse if and how they should be further developed.

Key Findings: Most concepts that influence the stability of home-based care are echoed in both guidelines. The SoCA-Dem theory clarifies the importance of the interplay between the different concepts; in the guidelines, these dynamic connections remain unclear. Thus, the SoCA-Dem theory is adaptable to the German health care system and can support future efforts to shift the focus from a more burden-oriented view of care to a comprehensive view of the situation.
