DZNE Joins the Human Immunome Project
An international initiative to decipher the immune system
New York/Bonn, September 29, 2025. DZNE is joining the Human Immunome Project (HIP) as a scientific partner and a member of the project’s European hub. The HIP is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to decoding the immune system.
The immune system play a pivotal role for health, as it is the body’s line of defense against external pathogens as well as against toxic byproducts of its own metabolism. In view of this, HIP’s goal is to harness immunological data on a global scale and artificial intelligence (AI) in order to better understand the immune system and pave the way for individualized therapies in the spirit of “precision medicine”. The collaboration brings together leading experts in the fields of life sciences and computer sciences.
“We are delighted to be part of this global endeavor,” said Prof. Joachim Schultze, DZNE's Director for Systems Medicine. “DZNE will provide expertise in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, in which immunology plays an important role. In addition, we will contribute our knowledge in Swarm Learning which is an AI-driven technology for analyzing large amounts of decentralized data.”
DZNE, the University of Bonn with its Cluster of Excellence ImmunoSensation2, and the Germany-based Consortium on “Swarm Learning for Precision Medicine in Infectious Diseases and Pandemic Preparedness” which is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, will collectively serve as the European hub for HIP.
Others members of HIP’s Scientific Partner Network include Japan’s National Research and Development Agency RIKEN, the Center for Human Systems Immunology at Stanford Medicine and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.
