Breuer-Stiftung honors four young DZNE researchers with "Best Paper Award"
For the fifth time, the Hans and Ilse Breuer Foundation has given special awards for outstanding publications to young researchers (doctoral or post-doctoral) in the research field of dementia. The announcement and awarding of this year's prize winners took place at the end of October during the renowned Eibsee Meeting „Cellular Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration“ 2025.
Four distinguished laureates
Shreeya Kedia from DZNE München (RG Prof. Mikael Simons) und Priv.-Doz. Dr. Dr. Bernhard Michalowsky from DZNE Greifswald share first place for the best publication. Both will receive 5,000 euros each for their scientific articles „T cell-mediated microglial activation triggers myelin pathology in a mouse model of amyloidosis“ (Kedia), published in Nature Neuroscience and „Clinical Outcomes and Cost-Effectiveness of Collaborative Dementia Care. A Secondary Analysis of a Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial” (Michalowsky), published in JAMA Netw Open. As a result, there will be no second place.
Third place winner Dr. Lena Hofbauer from the Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research (BIM) and the Institute of Education, Humboldt University of Berlin, formerly DZNE Greifswald (AG Rodriguez), receives 3,000 euros for her paper „Comparing two caregiver-delivered music listening interventions for community-dwelling people with dementia: A randomised controlled crossover pilot trial“, published in Dementia. For her paper „NLRP3-mediated glutaminolysis controls microglial phagocytosis to promote Alzheimer's disease progression“, published in Immunity, Dr. Róisín McManus from DZNE Bonn receives 2,000 euros as fourth place winner.
The award winners were selected by an international jury of experts, whose members are not members of the DZNE.
About the Hans und Ilse Breuer Foundation: The non-profit Hans and Ilse Breuer Foundation, based in Frankfurt am Main, is committed to helping those affected by dementia with its own dementia center, “StattHaus Offenbach”, while also promoting scientific fundamental research and health care research on dementia. Since 2006, the foundation has awarded the Alzheimer's Research Prize, which is endowed with 100,000 euros and has so far honored 25 prize winners. Also since 2006, the foundation has already awarded 40 scholarships to young scientists. In 2020, to mark the 20th anniversary of the foundation, the annual publication prizes were also announced for the first time.
