Research areas/focus
The group is working on topics such as healthy aging, cognitive impairment in old age, post-stroke neurorehabilitation, and vascular and Alzheimer's dementia.
Learning processes are examined for their neuronal correlates in a healthy aging, neurodegeneratively altered or stroke-damaged brain (behavioral measurements, functional and structural MRI-based imaging, electrophysiologically determined long-term potentiation).
Based on this, we develop interventional methods for learning improvement, especially in the area of recovery of speech and motor skills after a stroke as well as in neurodegenerative diseases. These include pharmacological learning support (dopaminergic and serotonergic agents), electrical brain stimulation (transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial DC stimulation) and lifestyle interventions such as physical activity or dietary approaches. In this context, we also investigate the interaction of response to interventional procedures with genetic predisposition.
