On Monday, January 23rd, 2012 at 6:00 pm, the fourth installment of the “Music and Brain” series will take place at Forschungszentrum caesar, Ludwig-Erhard-Allee 2 in Bonn.

The event will begin with a talk by Prof. Ina Vorberg, DZNE, on the topic “Prionen: neuartigen Erregern auf der Spur” (Prions: Exploring a novel kind of pathogen). Subsequently, Severin von Eckardstein will play works for piano by Nikolai Medtner (Sonata romantica b-Flat Minor op.53 Nr.1) and Robert Schumann (Carnaval op. 9). We cordially invite you to attend the programme and stay for a short reception afterwards. Participation is free. 

Prof. Ina Vorberg studied biology at the University in Tübingen and graduated at the Federal Research Centre for Virus Diseases of Animals in 1999. She then conducted research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Hamilton, Montana, USA. In 2004 she accepted a position as a young investigator at the Technical University Munich and has been group leader at the DZNE since 2010. Prof. Ina Vorberg investigates neurodegenerative diseases that are triggered by prions, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Prions are aggregates of misfolded proteins that can infect not only other cells, but also other organisms. Vorberg investigates, how prions recognise and penetrate their target cells. She hopes that the elucidation of these mechanisms will provide a basis for the development of new medications.

Severin von Eckardstein was born in 1978 in Düsseldorf, Germany. He took his first piano lessons when he was six years old. At the age of 12 he was accepted into the young talent class at the Robert Schumann Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf. After his graduation from high school, he attended the Universität der Künste, Berlin and the International Piano Academy Lake Como, Italy. Von Eckardstein won numerous competitions. Among these are the Feruccio-Busoni Competition in Bozen (1998) and the "Leeds International Piano Competition" (2000). In 2003, he won the international Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.
