Besides the still essential innovations in the field of new health care strategies, technologies and therapies, one of the most important tasks for increasing quality of care for people with dementia and their families today and in the future is, above all, the efficient transfer of knowledge into practice. Despite the increased availability of information through for example databases and the internet, a gap remains nonetheless between what is scientifically known and what will ultimately be applied in practice. It takes up to two decades for innovations or new scientifically proven recommendations to be implemented in practice. The "path of knowledge”, however, is not unidirectional. It is also about the question of how knowledge from practical experience can be transferred to research and to decision-makers. Implementation research concerns the question, which conditions and methods foster the implementing of innovations. Consequently, the overall research questions of the group Knowledge Circulation and Implementation Research are:

  • How can scientific facts and action relevant knowledge of neurodegenerative diseases be sustainably transferred to the affected target groups?
  • How can evidence be implemented in a sustainable manner and does this lead to better health care?
  • How can problems in the daily health care be evaluated, transformed into research questions and be addressed scientifically?

The group addresses such questions in a multidisciplinary manner with quantitive and qualitative research methods. Various topicas are taking  into consideration such as

  • guidelinesand their implementation
  • the implementation of measures of health care services, such as Dementia Care Mapping (DCM)
  • new media as a vehicle to convey knowledge
  • nursing case conferences and medical quality circles.

In group overlapping projects we try to identify barriers to implementation and to develop and evaluate intervention to overcome these barriers. On the other hand, questions from practice will be taken up and processed for researchers and decision makers, incorporating particularlyusing innovative research methods and concepts.
