Prof. Dr. Martin Dichgans

Curriculum Vitae

Martin Dichgans is a Professor of Neurology and Director of the Institute for Stroke and Dementia Research at the Medical Center of the University of Munich, Germany.

Prof. Dichgans studied medicine at the Universities of Freiburg, Heidelberg, Vienna and Munich and did his Ph.D. with Prof. Beyreuther at the Center for Molecular Biology in Heidelberg. He received his professional training in Neurology/Psychiatry at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich. In 1994 he spent a fellowship at the Alzheimer Research Laboratory at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Since 2007, he is speaker and, since 2009, head of the Interdisciplinary Stroke Center Munich (ISZM) at the Medical Center of the University of Munich. Since 2008, he is managing director and, since 2010, director of the Institute for Stroke and Dementia Research (ISD) at the Medical Center of the University of Munich. There, he holds the Endowed Chair for Translational Stroke and Dementia Research.

His major areas of research are the mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of cerebral small vessel disease and vascular dementia. His methodological focus is in genetics, imaging and the conduction of investigator-initiated studies. He is the author of more than 160 original and review articles, the author of numerous book chapters and member of several guideline committees. He has been principal investigator in a number of clinical trials including a multicenter trial in vascular dementia. Martin Dichgans received several research awards. He is on the editorial board of the journals Stroke, Cerebrovascular Diseases and Frontiers in Stroke.

Since 2010, Professor Dichgans has been an associate member of the DZNE, Munich.
