Areas of investigation/research focus
The research of our group is primarily aimed at investigating behavioural and cognitive processes associated with healthy and pathological brain aging. We are specifically interested in memory disorders, with a major emphasis on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease. Within our various research projects in the field of translational brain research, we investigate the neural networks associated with personal familiarity and prospective memory during healthy aging, preclinical and early dementia applying functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques (Fig.1).
We are also interested in whether non-pharmacological therapies and interventions would be able to modulate progression of dementia. We utilize cognitive and physical exercise programs to study their influence on cognitive abilities and brain structure and function in patients with early dementia.
Imaging methods include high-resolution structural and functional MRI (Fig.2). Finally we are developing and refining scales and other techniques for use in early disease detection and for measuring longitudinal effects in intervention studies. These methods are aimed at characterizing specific cognitive abilities and their dysfunctions that would not be detectable using standard neuropsychological assessments. We also investigate caregiver burden and the patients’ ability to perform complex activities of daily living using novel assessment methods. This may ultimately complement quantitative prediction models for future cognitive and behavioral deterioration, and could be helpful to better characterize or measure therapeutic effects in patients with dementia and its preclinical stages.
