Dr. Martin Fuhrmann
Curriculum Vitae
Dr. Fuhrmann studied technical Biology at the University of Stuttgart (1997-2002) and graduated at the Institute of Cell Biology and Immunology headed by Prof. Pfizenmaier. For his PhD thesis (2002-20007) he moved to Munich, where he joined the group of Prof. Herms at the Center of Neuropathology and Prion Research (ZNP) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich. During his PhD thesis, Dr. Fuhrmann analyzed prion protein function under physiological and pathological conditions. He was the first to analyze the process of synapse degenertion in prion-infected mice in real time in vivo. To this end, he established the cutting edge technique of in vivo two-photon imaging.
During his postdoc (2007-2010), Dr. Fuhrmann stayed at the Center of Neuropathology and Prion Research (ZNP) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich. He extended his research focus to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), analyzing the molecular mechanisms of synapse and neuron loss in AD transgenic mouse models. Moreover, he became interested in the close relationship of the immune and nervous system in the CNS and therefore investigated neuron-glia interaction and neuroinflammation. Since September 2010, Dr. Fuhrmann has been a Junior Research Group Leader at the DZNE in Bonn.
