Areas of investigation/research focus

Background and Aim:
Since more and more people reach high ages, neurodegenerative diseases, especially dementia, become an important issue of our society.
Valid data sources for the estimation of the temporal and spatial extent as well as of the costs of dementia hardly exist. However, a reliable data base of the present number of demented people is indispensable for projections of the future number of people with dementia and the associated medical costs and care need.
Therefore, we aim to establish a national dementia registry which should be preferably based on data from the German public health insurance funds. Further, we aim to create a legal base for the construction of the dementia registry which regulates permanently regulates the access to the data from the German public health insurance funds.

Studies:
In a joint study with the “Wissenschaftliches Institut der AOK”, (WIdO) we use routine data for research in the field of dementia. In this study, we firstly check the validity of the routine data. Secondly, we use the data for an estimation of administrative dementia prevalence and incidence of the insured population of the AOK. Further aims of the study are to identify demographic and disease-related risk factors of dementia diagnosis and to generate reliable estimates of the medical costs of dementia. Additionally, we intend to analyze the transition into care need and into institution after having received the diagnosis “dementia”.
A second project is initiated in collaboration with the „Medizinischer Dienst des Spitzenverbandes Bund der Krankenkassen (MDS)”. In Germany, the ascertainment of care need, which is associated with the right to benefits from the statutory nursing care insurance, is performed by an expert assessment of the “Medizinischer Dienst der Krankenversicherung (MDK)”. The expert decides whether a person is entitled to receive benefits and documents the diagnosis. The MDS collects the data of the assessment from all regional offices and provides statistics about care need for total Germany. This data, covering all applications in Germany, will be analyzed exploring the question to what extent the entitlement of care need is correlated with the diagnosis of dementia.

Further Studies in Collaboration with the DZNE Rostock/Greifswald:
