Currently, around one million people over the age of 65 suffer from the consequences of dementia in Germany, while approximately 200,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. This number will increase in future, because the society is becoming older. The DZNE – Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen – has been found to investigate Alzheimer`s and Parkinson`s diseases and to develop new therapeutic approaches. Prof. Dr. Pierluigi Nicotera, executive Director of the 16th Helmholtz centre, explains what neurodegenerative diseases are.
