Strategy Board
The Strategy Board of the DZNE is composed of the speakers from each DZNE site and the DZNE Executive Board.
Members of the Strategy Board
Prof. Sabine Bartholomeyczik
Since 2001, Sabine Bartholomeyczik has been holding a chair at the Institute for Health Care at Witten/Herdecke University’s Faculty of Medicine. Her major research matters are care of dementia patients, nutrition issues, assessment instruments for care diagnosis, and the implications of DRG funding (diagnosis related group) for care at emergency hospitals. Since September 2009 she has been establishing the core theme health care strategies for people with dementia at DZNE’s site Witten in cooperation with Witten/Herdecke University. From 2006 to 2010 she has been board member at the Deutsches Netzwerk für Versorgungsforschung (DNVF) and from 1999 to 2009 primary chairlady of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Pflegewissenschaft.
Prof. Emrah Düzel
Since 2005 Emrah Düzel is at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London (UCL). He is professor of cognitive neuroscience (2008). In addition, Emrah Düzel is director of the Institute of Cognitive Neurology and Dementia Research at the University of Magdeburg and is an honorary member of the UCL Welcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging. He conducts research at the level of the whole organism on the neuromodulatory and electrophysiological mechanisms of hippocampus-dependent memory in young and older adults and patients with various neurological diseases.
Prof. André Fischer
Prof. Thomas Gasser
Thomas Gasser is the Director at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research at the University of Tübingen, Germany. In 2002, he moved to that institute to become head of the Department of Neurodegenerative Diseases. Before that he became university lecturer at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich (LMU) and headed the research group on neurogenetics and the outpatient department for movement disorders at the Department of Neurology. His main areas of research are the genetic and molecular basis of Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and other movement disorders, as well as their diagnosis and treatment.
Prof. Christian Haass
Since 1999 Christian Haass heads the Department of Metabolic Biochemistry at the Adolf-Butenandt Institut of the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität in Munich (LMU). His main research area is decoding the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration – with a special emphasis on AD, Parkinson and Frontotemporal Dementia. Since 2000 he has been directing a DFG Collaborative Research Centre on "Molecular Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration" (SFB 596). Prof. Haass is member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the "Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina" (National Academy of Sciences) and recepient of numerous awards include amongst others the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the Potamkin Prize of the American Academy of Neurology and the MetLife Prize for medical research.
Prof. Gerd Kempermann
Since 2007 Gerd Kempermann is Professor for Genomics of Regeneration at the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD). Before he had been group leader at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in Berlin-Buch. Since 2009 he has been the speaker of the DZNE site in Dresden. His research focuses on neural stem cells, in particular in relation to the generation of new neurons in the adult brain (adult neurogenesis) and its regulation by genes and physical as well as cognitive activity.
Prof. Thomas Klockgether
Thomas Klockgether is since May 2011 Director of Clinical Research at the DZNE and since February 2010 he has been Speaker of the Zentrum für seltene Erkrankungen Bonn (ZSEB). After graduating, he went to Oldenburg for clinical training and then returned to the Max Planck Institute to work in basic research on Parkinson's disease. He completed his specialist training in Tübingen, where he also began to focus on degenerative ataxias, in addition to pursuing research on Parkinson’s disease. These research lines evolved very successfully during his appointment in Bonn as Director of Department of Neurology. Prof. Klockgether has been the Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn from 2008 to 2011.
Prof. Stefan Teipel
Stefan Teipel was appointed director of the Dementia Research Section at the Department of Psychiatry in 2008 at the University of Rostock. In 2000, he became head of the Neuroimaging and Dementia Research section at the Department of Psychiatry at the Ludwig-Maximilians Univeristät in Munich (LMU). He received his professional training in Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry at the LMU. His main interest is in clinical research on neurodegenerative dementias, with a special emphasis on neuroimaging markers for the early diagnosis and mapping of disease progression. Additionally, he has a background in biostatistics and biomarker research.
