Postdoc (f/m) or research fellow in Ophthalmic epidemiology – Code 1169/2013/2

Description: The DZNE is currently establishing the Rhineland Study, a prospective population based cohort study that will include 30,000 people aged 30 years and over. The Rhineland Study, led by Prof. Monique M.B. Breteler, Director of Population Health Sciences of the DZNE, aims to investigate causes and preclinical biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases, and to study normal and pathological brain structure and function over the adult life course. The study facilities encompass 3 recruitment centers equipped with state-of-the art apparatus including 3T MRI scanners, advanced bio-banking facilities and large data storage and computational resources.

The cohort emphasizes extensive phenotyping, which also includes detailed ophthalmologic assessments including assessment of visual acuity, cornea and lens, optical coherence tomography and fundus autofluorescence of macula and optic disc, and photography of the lens, macula and disc. We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious researcher who will further develop this research area within the framework of the study in collaboration with the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Bonn (Director: Prof. Frank Holz). Responsibilities include development and implementation of relevant study protocols, supervision and monitoring of data acquisition and processing, analysis of data and preparation of manuscripts for publication in international journals, initiation of new research projects, mentoring of graduate and PhD students.

Qualifications and experience:

Successful candidates hold an excellent university degree in medicine, epidemiology, optometry or another relevant science degree. Demonstrable interest in quantitative research, strong analytical skills, ability for independent and critical thinking, and excellent communication and writing skills in the English language are a prerequisite. Working experience in epidemiological research or large-scale studies is highly desirable.

Creative, highly motivated and team-oriented candidates who dare to take initiative and enjoy working in a fast-growing, dynamic research environment in an internationally oriented biomedical institution are strongly encouraged to apply.  We offer a scientific position with a long-term perspective. The position is initially limited to two years.
